New user identity with a unique userTag
We improved user identity so every profile is clearer, easier to recognize, and more consistent across the platform.
Context
In daily collaboration, correctly identifying each person is essential to avoid confusion. This update improves how user identity is represented throughout the app. Before this change, teams with similar display names could create friction in mentions, assignments, and activity reviews.
A strong identity model needs two things: readability for humans and uniqueness for systems. The new userTag gives us both.
What changed
- Each user now has a unique
userTagthat is easier to recognize. - We improved how names are shown in key views.
- The profile experience is now more consistent for teams of all sizes.
- Identity references are clearer in cards, comments, and ownership views.
The userTag is designed to stay stable while still being readable. That helps teams reference people reliably without exposing unnecessary personal data.
Why this matters operationally
Identity errors are not just cosmetic. They can affect delivery if tasks are assigned to the wrong person or if review threads are mixed up. A unique and visible user identifier reduces this risk, especially in distributed teams or organizations with repeated first names.
This change also improves audit clarity. When teams inspect task history, they can quickly confirm who did what and when, without guessing between similar names.
Migration notes
No manual migration step is required for normal usage. Existing accounts receive a userTag and profiles can continue to use display names as before. Teams can adopt the new identifier gradually:
- Use display name +
userTagin internal workflows. - Encourage
userTagusage in mentions for high-traffic boards. - Use the unique identifier in automation or integration contexts.
Impact for teams
This update reduces identity mistakes and makes collaboration clearer. It is especially useful when team members have similar names or when teams are distributed across multiple projects and time zones.
In practical terms, it reduces rework. Fewer assignment mistakes means less correction overhead and smoother ownership transitions.
